There are a lot of areas where we can get bogged down with doubt: Will I succeed at my job? Will I ever find a good job? Will my marriage survive? Will I ever find someone to marry? Will my health improve? Will I succeed in college? Will I ever be able to go to college? Will my finances improve? Will my kids make good decisions? Will someone close to me overcome their faith crisis? Will I be able to forgive those who hurt me? There is a lot to doubt about.
The Bible says in James 1:5-8, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything form the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”
Doubt can be debilitating. Someone once said, “Your faith can move mountains – and your doubt can create them.” William Shakespeare is credited as stating that “our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.”
We can have faith in God – but we can’t be full of faith and full of doubt at the same time. The Bible says, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1). We choose doubt or faith. When faith walks in…doubt walks out. When we doubt, faith is pushed out. There’s an old saying, “If you chase two rabbits, both will escape.”
What are you chasing after? Let me encourage you to lean into Christ. Trust in His grace and strength. He is more than sufficient to meet all of our needs. Jesus tells us in Mark 11:22 to “Have faith in God.”
Faith in God is stronger than doubt. Because God is stronger. So turn to Him. Trust Him with your doubts. Have confidence and assurance in a God who loves you and is ever-present for you.
