Complacency is a false sense of security and the antithesis of wisdom. In Proverbs 1 we are encouraged to be wise, fear the Lord, seek knowledge, and shun folly. “For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm” (Proverbs 1:32-33).
The complacent person is unwise. He willingly ignores the wisdom of God and follows his own ways. We must seek to be wise in God’s eyes. God’s Word is God’s Wisdom and as such must be our prevailing pursuit. We need to study God’s Word regularly and compare our lives to Scripture. Where our life contradicts Scripture we must self-correct and align our lives with God’s Word. Not to do so is a form of complacency and a false sense of security.
Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” No one sets out to be a fool. No one seeks to be unwise. However, many people fall into complacency and simply do what is right in their own eyes and do not filter their lives and decisions and relationships through God’s Wisdom or God’s Word.
Take some time right now to ask yourself a few questions. Is there an area of my life where I demonstrate complacency? Do I regularly read God’s Word and compare it to my life and make course corrections when and where needed? Do I seek God’s Wisdom by mining God’s Word for daily guidance? Where in my life do I need to align my life more squarely with God’s instructions? Am I living to pursue the Wisdom of God as clearly outlined in His Word, the Bible?
Complacency creeps in when we do not live a life of regular self-evaluation. Let’s ask God to forgive us where we have been ignoring Him, and may we all devote ourselves more diligently to follow His Ways by seeking His Wisdom in His Word.
