As you read through the Proverbs, I urge you to reflect, pray, and apply these devotional bits of encouragement and wisdom to your own life.
It has been said that “Humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less.” The Bible says to “Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up.” The problem of pride is as old as man, and it sets us on a destructive path. Pride essentially got Adam and Eve booted from the garden, and it destroys marriages, family relationships, and lives today. Selfishness. Egocentrism. Pride. Do you have an “I” problem? We all do to some degree. Our daily prayer must be what John the Baptist prayed, “Lord, may you increase, and I decrease.” The human heart is bent toward self. We need to humble ourselves before the Lord daily and ask Him to make us more like Him, a humble servant. Pride is something we will war against throughout life. But the key is to be aware of it, call it out, and root it out of our marriage, family, and all relationships. Humble self. God will lift us up as we do.
“Those who disregard discipline despise themselves, but the one who heeds correction gains understanding. Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the Lord, and humility comes before honor.” – Proverbs 15:32-33
